Fliers, Newsletters, & Brochures
What...
I am having a lot of fun completing this assignment so far! There are many fun templates to choose from, which can then be customized with clipart and text. I'm using Word Publisher, which is quite user friendly. There are many school type themes to search through. I am excited to play around with these tools a bit more and use them for various projects and events. I haven't used these tools as much as I should have and am now going to start using these materials a lot more, now that I realize what I can use them for!
So What...
Knowledge of how to create and implement these three tools is a must as a teacher! What teacher doesn't have a monthly newsletter for their class or school, a flier about upcoming events and field trips, etc! I remember making brochures for school projects all the time! Teachers need to know how to integrate this kind of technology into their class for better clarity and organization for their classroom.
Now What...
I plan on using newsletters as a way to include parents in their child's education. That way parents can stay afloat of upcoming projects and material that is being taught, etc. I could use a brochure to announce my new preschool and pricing information, etc. And of course fliers can be used for announcing and reminding students/parents of upcoming concerts, school plays, fundraisers, etc.
Video: Schoolhouse Rock-Nouns
I find it quite interesting, a noun is a person, place, or thing! I love schoolhouse rock! I really want to buy the set and have my kids watch them. Their songs always get stuck in my head! I've talked about these schoolhouse rock videos before, but they're just a great way to get students learning about important things in a fun, interactive way. It would be a great idea to start off each day's lesson with one of these videos. That way, students are engaged right away and their attention is held. Next, the teacher can start right into her lesson on nouns!

Week 13 Reflection
Holiday (Free Choice Reflection)
As I have been learning how to implement various technology media into the classroom, I've had the opportunity through some of my UVU coursework, to observe a few different schools and see how they use technology.
One school I went to, Kindergarten students were able to go to the computer lab once a week, which is great. The computer teacher was a little intimidating to the kids though, she didn't explain things or really make computers fun and exciting, which they should be at this age.
The regular Kindergarten teacher was great though. She used stories on CD and educational DVD s. She had a projector type machine that enlarged her hand movements and drawings on a screen, for the whole class to see.
A few other schools I went to had music on CD, but that was pretty much it. I think a lot of schools are still working on a slow transition to technology in the classroom. Digital education in America has come a long way, but schools need to start implementing the very things we have learned in EDEL 2200.
While I was observing, there were times when I thought the teacher's lesson could be greatly enhanced by a Google presentation or a slide show with digital pictures. These observations have really inspired me to make sure I use technology in my future classroom.

Introducing Web 2.0
Web 2,0 is awesome! I love all these new resources that are available on the web now. I am still learning and experimenting with a lot of these tools, such as wikis and podcasts. I think that as a teacher, it will be critical to know how to use these tools and be able to integrate them into curriculum and assignments.

Week 12 Reflection
Web 2.0 Technologies
Honestly, I didn't even know what web 2.0 was until I looked it up just now! I found this great definition:
The use of World Wide Web technology and web design that aims to facilitate creativity, information sharing, and, most notably, collaboration among users. These concepts have led to the development and evolution of web-based communities and hosted services, such as social-networking sites, wikis, blogs, and folksonomies.
So, knowing that, I think web 2.0 technologies are incredibly vital to today's classroom. Students need to be able to collaborate with classmates as they complete assignments and projects, using the web. Just from my experience in working with classmates in this class, i have been able to finish projects much more quickly and efficiently, by using tools like google documents, google presentations. These tools are so great because of the ability to change, edit, and update information instantly online.
I plan on having my future students use wikis and blogs as an outlet to express their thoughts in a creative way that can be shared with classmates. This helps the class connect to each other in an exciting way. Social networking sites are also a great way to collaborate with peers and share information. Today's student has to know all about these tools in order to stay afloat of this ever changing world. we as educators need to utilize these tools in our everyday assignments and lesson plans.

Wow, who is this Dalton Sherman kid?? He is adorable and such an amazing speaker! I loved his speech, it's so moving. Sometimes we forget how important it is to believe in our students, our colleagues, ourselves. These kids need their teachers to care about them and take the time to listen and be there for them because like he said, sometimes it feels like no one else cares. Everyone involved with the school is important and makes an impact on the future of its students.

week 11 Reflection
PowerPoint Activities & PowerPoint
I kinda love power point! It's really fun and addicting! The activities that my partner and I made were so interesting, I want to do them at home too! We made bookmarks to print out with a mini biography of our favorite author. The next activity was to make up titles for books that were never written, such as The Brain by Sarah Bellum. So cute!
There are some great ideas that I'd like to try on power point from the activity book. The basic activites at the beginning of the book are great for students who are just learning how to create power point presentations. They can learn how to harvest pictures, sounds, and video from the internet and put them onto their power point slides. Students can make books, posters, bookmarks, comics, and the list just goes on and on! I'm really excited to make some of these projects.

Week 10 Reflection
Podcasts & Vidcasts
Podcasts and vidcasts are great educational tools. There are a huge variety of subject specific casts that can teach the average person a new language or how to write a poem. Again pod/vid casts are another great tech medium that can enhance any lesson. Students love being able to use technology for assignments and they'll be having so much fun, they won't even realize they're learning!
I really enjoyed the assignment to create an educational podcast for my "students". My partner and I decided to make a podcast that teaches children the sound that each letter in the alphabet makes. We recorded ourselves saying the letter, its sound and a few exmple words that begin with that letter. We then told the children to repeat the letters and sounds. I think this is a great way to help students memorize and internalize information, especially when they are not at school.
I'd use pod/vid casts as homework assignments for my future students. I would assign them a pod/vid cast to listen to/watch at home that ties into the week's curriculum. That way, the subject material becomes more interactive and interesting. Students can write a 'how-to' from what they learned from the pod/vid cast or even act out the info they listened to, for the class.

Week 8 Reflection
Using Video Media in the Classroom
What?
I thought that the educational simulations on National Geographic were awesome for classroom use. It's a great way to easily recreate an experience or trip, when an actual visit or experience might be too dangerous or costly to actually perform. It was fun exploring teachertube and finding so many great teaching videos that can be used to explain concepts and subjects to students.
So What?
It would be fun to have my students go on a virtual field trip one day to a volcano or a rainforest. I really liked the idea mentioned in class about bringing in something real to enhance the virtual field trip, such as a real starfish or perhaps a fossil of some sort. Kids love learning with visual, hands-on tools like that. It would be great to show different video clips from the web, such as the life cycle of a frog. The students can then go online and virtually disect a frog. It might be fun to do a spotlight on different countries and have students "travel" around to different countries (stations) and experience each culture, climate, etc. through a simulative video on National Geographic.
Now What?
I think that using such media in the classroom really helps children understand subject material in a fun, hands-on way. As teachers we need to keep up on technology and take advantage of the great educational resources that are available. It's important to bring education into reality for students to really understand what's being taught. For example, when teaching students about different environments, it would be very helpful to actually show students what each environment is like and use as many of the six senses as possible, to really bring home the lesson.

Week 7 Reflection
Picasa
It's funny because I was just telling my husband that I needed some kind of program to edit my pictures, write text on them, and just make them look cool. And then in class we learned about Picasa! I love it, it's so user friendly, I've already downloaded it (for free) to my home computer and am now importing all of my pictures onto it.
I think Picasa would be a great tool to use in the classroom. Students can create sideshows, time lines, picture collages. It's simple to use, so students can learn how to crop, edit and add effects to photos they have taken with digital cameras. Students can also create a web album, with all of their photos in one place.
I'm excited to play around with Picasa a little more and become more familiar with it. I've already been having a lot of fun with my pictures! There really is an endless amount of projects that I can think of doing with this awesome program!

Week 6 Reflection
The Pros of Using Digital Cameras (digicams) in the Classroom:
There are a lot of great ideas out there for bringing digicams into the classroom. Using this media form is a great way to get students involved in fun and interesting projects. They can decide what they want to learn about or study, snap a picture and write a report on it.
Pictures can enhance almost any project. A science experiment of a caterpillar becoming a butterfly could be photographically documented at each and every stage of development.
I think that using digicams helps students to see and learn from the the world around them. For example, I did my slide show on shapes. I found shapes in unconventional places, which will help my students to start taking a closer look at the world around them. They can pick out a banana and identify it as a crescent shape. Doing projects like this, really encourages kids to get excited about learning in their everyday life.
Another great thing about using digicams is the ease of snapping a photo and then transferring the image straight to the computer. This makes it easier for students to edit photos for assignments or projects. It's also great for visual aids in presentations.

Love it! Very cute video. I will be taking some of those tips and storing them in my brain, such as believing a student when they say they really have to use the bathroom! I liked the one about hearing your last name so much, you'll want to change it.

Week 5 Reflection
Internet Safety
I wholeheartedly believe that there is a place for Internet usage in education, as long as educators take the time to properly implement Internet assignments and activities in a way that is safe for their students. I believe that the web can greatly enhance classrooms around the world. It would be unfortunate to ignore or shun this great resource that is available to us.
Why evaluate the sites we use:
It is crucial for educators, parents, and students to learn how to properly evaluate websites. There is so much content on the web today, with a large percentage being inappropriate for students. When students are given a research assignment, they need to have the tools to identify whether a website's information is academically legitimate. Teachers need to guide their students, by providing them with safe, reputable sites and educational resources.Why evaluate the sites we use:
Questions to ask when evaluating a site:
I really like Kathy Schrock's 5 W's of Website Evaluation. She gives five simple things to look for when evaluating a website. Such as; who, what, when, where, and why.
Here are some specific tips she gives:
Who wrote the pages and are they an expert?
What does the author say is the purpose of the site?
When was the site created?
Where does the information come from?
Why is this information useful for my purpose?
Teachers should instruct their students to use questions like these, every time they use a website for homework and various projects.
Ways to keep students safe while surfing:
A good idea for keeping students safe online is to provide them with several websites that have been pre-evaluated by their teacher. I've found uen.org and Pioneer Online Library to provide a wide selection of safe, educational recources for students to use. Students can find reliable search engines for research projects, such as EBSCO Host. Educators can also help by teaching their students Internet safety guidelines and how to evaluate websites.
Parents should make sure to monitor their child's home computer time as well.

Week 4 Reflection
UEN Reflection
I was actually thinking of doing a similar scavenger hunt, like the one we did for this class, for my future students. It was the perfect way to become familiar with all of the resources that UEN has to offer. It was fun trying to find all of the different links and research tools. I thought of so many ideas that I can use as a teacher, it got me really excited!
The core curriculum for each grade was so helpful and eye-opening for me as a future educator. It listed specific activities and lessons to help teach each standard and objective for each age level and grade. I can see it really helping me as a teacher to make sure that I'm continually meeting the educational needs of my students.
I had a lot of fun with, "surf the ages". I was thinking of using this tool for a program where my students would divide into groups and relive different time periods. For example, some students could reenact the interviews from Sophocles and Euripides, after receiving the Dio Award.
I absolutely love the interactives that UEN has to offer. These educational games are perfect for young students during computer lab days. I really see myself using the interactives to help reinforce subjects I've taught, in a fun and interactive way. I really want my kids to be excited to learn. Plus, it will help young students refine simple computer skills.
Pioneer Library is awesome for helping students with research projects. It really is a better search engine for students, compared to Google search. It's much more relevant and specific to young students and it eliminates all of the "junk" that usually comes up in a standard Google search.
I am just thrilled with the wealth of resources on UEN's site! It's going to help me be such a better teacher. I'll be able to connect more fully with my students and help them to develop a real enthusiasm for learning.

Week 3 Reflection
Everything Google, Week 2
Well, yet another awesome tool this week: Google Presentations! I really enjoyed doing the slide show on classroom rules. It was very easy to use and a great way to enhance lesson plans and educational material. It really enlarges words and images for everyone in the classroom to view clearly.
One of my professors said that 85% of children are visual learners. Google Presentations is such a great tool for teachers to really connect with students. I see myself using this tool in a way that will more effectively teach material to young students.
Now What?
I plan on using google presentations to create fun slide shows that will grab my student's attention while I am teaching lessons and giving lectures. Elementary aged children lose focus easily, so this tool will work wonders, I'm sure! I can also use this tool with my students, as they present group projects to the class. I'm excited to use this tool to tell stories and teach songs to my students as well.

Week 2 Reflection
Everything Google
I am so excited after class on Tuesday! I am in love with Google!! They have so many awesome tools to use and they're free! As a future educator I definitely plan on using Google tools.
I'm already familiar with Google calendar and I use it on a daily basis. However, it never occurred to me that I could also use it as a teacher! I plan on creating a class website for my future preschool, complete with Google calendar. That way parents can easily see upcoming field trips, holidays, etc. It's a great way to stay connected.
I was first introduced to Google Docs, during class this week. I had no idea that tool even existed! I am ecstatic to begin using it! I am always wanting to work on a paper at school, but can't access it from my files at home. Now I can keep all of my papers online wherever I go! The online collaborator is such a valuable tool for students. I plan to use Google docs to create parent newsletters for my future preschool.
'Pay Attention' Video
I was really moved by this video! It really made me think 'out of the box' as a future educator. It makes complete sense to use technology in the classroom today. I think that using podcasts, online videos, and even cell phones is the perfect way to reach students today. My only concern is making sure that students who don't have access to certain technology or can't afford cell phones or i pods, aren't excluded from assignments. It would be crucial for schools to receive funding for current technology and educational electronics.
As teachers, we need to make sure that our teaching methods evolve with our students. I found some sites online that I plan to use in my future preschool. For example, I found a video clip of Elmo from Sesame Street, explaining how to stay healthy during the flu season. There are so many great resources at our fingertips! It is crucial that educators continue to stay afloat of new educational technology that can enhance the classroom and the student experience.

I was really moved by this video! It really made me think 'out of the box' as a future educator. It makes complete sense to use technology in the classroom today. I think that using podcasts, online videos, and even cell phones is the perfect way to reach students today. My only concern is making sure that students who don't have access to certain technology or can't afford cell phones or i pods, aren't excluded from assignments. It would be crucial for schools to receive funding for current technology and educational electronics.
As teachers, we need to make sure that our teaching methods evolve with our students. I found some sites online that I plan to use in my future preschool. For example, I found a video clip of Elmo from Sesame Street, explaining how to stay healthy during the flu season. There are so many great resources at our fingertips! It is crucial that educators continue to stay afloat of new educational technology that can enhance the classroom and the student experience.

Week 1 Reflection (EDEL 2200)
My Ideal Classroom
I'm sitting on a rainbow colored floor mat, reading an exciting book to my four year old preschool class. The kids are a rich variety of cultures, backgrounds, abilities, and ethnicity. The walls are filled with colorful pictures of animals and people of every race and culture. My classroom is clean and organized, but bright and colorful as well. I encourage my kids to have fun and explore the world around them. I want them to be excited to come to class and learn about their environment.
We sing songs throughout the school day and work on writing our name and the letters of the alphabet. We draw, paint, and play with all sorts of materials and textures. We practice each letter's sound, so that we can get ready to read. We play pretend and learn about different animals. We learn how to count objects and do simple math.
I help the kids learn how to make friends and share. We spend time outside exploring and practicing large motor skills, such as hopping and skipping. I teach my class how to stay healthy and safe.
I find new ways to teach by collaborating with the other teachers at my school. We share ideas on how to help children who may be struggling in different ways. I maintain positive relationships with my students' parents and create ways for them to get involved in their child's education.
I love coming to school everyday to teach my students. I enjoy seeing my class light up with an enthusiasm for learning!

I do not like the idea of metering online usage. I love being able to use the internet as my personal library of information! The internet is a valuable tool for students and teachers alike. Putting a price on it would be detrimental to students of low income families.
As for the touch screen technology on computers, I love them! I'm very familiar with this technology. My husband is a computer engineer and has been working long nights, creating an awesome touch screen feature for a large computer company. I think it will make computers much more user friendly.
I totally want an i phone! That's awesome, that they're becoming less expensive. I'm glad that they're trying to come down to the average consumer's level.
The "Our Courts" video game for students is awesome! I am so excited about this new tool, as a future educator. Kids today are obsessed with computer games and this is the perfect way to help them learn about our judicial system. I would definitely require my students to use this tool as part of my curriculum.
The sugarlabs kid friendly operating system is awesome! I get so excited about new ways to get kids involved in learning. I had a horrible time in computer lab in my elementary years. I would've greatly benefited from something like this. That is great that they're making it less expensive.
